DURING THE WEEK of June 16-June 25, the AAPD reported a total of 75 crimes. In comparison, Dearborn Police, who patrol a city with a population just slightly smaller than Ann Arbor’s (101,000), but which is also home to a U-M campus, reported 37 crimes last week. The DPD, however, do not report in all crime categories. However, comparing the crime categories reported by both police departments there emerges significant dissimilarity.
For instance, there were twice as many burglaries in Dearborn (14) as in Ann Arbor (7), but all of Ann Arbor’s burglaries last week were forced entry crimes, including forced entry home invasions. In Dearborn, only four of the burglaries reported last week occurred at residences—the remaining burglaries were non-residence break-ins. The AAPD reported 12 thefts from vehicles and six vehicle thefts. The DPD reported seven thefts from vehicles or parts & accessories from vehicles. The two cities had about the same number of vehicle thefts, last week.
Between June 16-25, in Ann Arbor, there were a dozen assaults, including two with weapons (not guns), reported by the AAPD. In Ann Arbor, there were a dozen instances of fraud reported by police, but no robberies. In Dearborn police reported seven robberies, including three (two street robberies) in which a gun was used, as well as a bank robbery. There was also a carjacking.
After assaults, vehicle break-ins and fraud (12 crimes reported each last week by the AAPD), larceny (11) was the crime committed most frequently. There was a purse snatching (no force) and theft of items from yards.
As we wrote in a previous piece, since January Sunday has been the day of the week on which most assaults have occurred. During June 16-25 Sunday was the day of the week on which the majority of assaults took place. Thursday June 18 was the day of the week on which the largest number of crimes were committed. On Tuesday June 14 the AAPD reported a total of five crimes.
Finally, there were two sex crimes reported by the AAPD last week, one 4th degree criminal sexual conduct (forcible contact) and the other 1st degree criminal sexual conduct, penetration. There have been 30 sex crimes reported by the AAPD thus far in 2014.
