Newspaper readers and subscriptions are on the rise!
Tech Crunch reported recently that “a recent Nielsen Scarborough study found that more than 169 million U.S. adults now read newspapers every month, in print, online or mobile. That’s almost 70 percent of the population.”
The Ann Arbor Independent makes advertising a secondary source of income and relies on paid subscriptions. Why are we embracing paid subscriptions for content over ad-based business models? People hate ads. More than 80 million Americans will use ad blockers this year, and despite all the media industry talk about relevant “native advertising,” most of us are still drowning in pop-ups.
We want our readers to focus on the news. We don’t hide articles behind a paywall. Everyone is welcome to read our content.
Ads can also compromise editorial independence. That’s why we never accept advertising from local government, Washtenaw County, AAPS, U-M, WCC or EMU.
