272 Assaults Reported by AAPD to Date in 2014— 11 Percent Involved Weapons, Including Guns

AN ANALYSIS OF data submitted by the AAPD reveals that an individual in Ann Arbor is most likely to be assaulted on Sunday and then Saturday. Monday has been, since January of this year, the day of the week on which the fewest assaults took place. The majority of assaults reported by the AAPD thus far this year are assault/battery/simple (including domestic assaults and police officers). However, records revealed bomb threats (2), and two dozen reported instances of a telephone being used for harassment, threats. There have been almost as many instance of individuals using a telephone for harassment and threats since the beginning of 2014 as there have been individuals charged with aggravated assault—a felony—including the use of a weapon.

Since January, the use of a gun during an aggravated assault as reported by the AAPD occurred in two family disputes, the most recent one on June 10. The use of a gun during an aggravated assault as reported by the AAPD occurred in two non-family assaults, as well, most recently on May 28. On April 8, in the 600 block of South Main, there was an assault less than murder and on May 24, an assault with intent to murder one block up, at 700 South Main.

In the 300 block of South Fifth Avenue (the vicinity of the Downtown Library), AAPD records show three instances of assault/battery/simple (including domestic assaults and police officers) reported between January 1, 2014 and June 19, 2014. The Ann Arbor Independent used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain AADL incident reports filed by library staff between January 1, 2014 and June 5, 2014. The AAPD reported assaults in the 300 block of South Fifth Avenue on the following dates: January 3, 2014; January 23, 2014; March 1, 2014. AADL incident reports show AAPD officers responded to calls about patron assaults at the Downtown Library on the following dates: January 3, 2014; March 1, 2014; May 1, 2014.

The federal Bureau of Justice Statistics looks at seasonal patterns in various types of crime in the US. The Bureau’s data show simple assault is the only type of crime that’s more common in Fall than any other time of year.
