Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Deputy to be Sentenced in May for Using Neck Hold on Inmate

In August 2021, a Washtenaw County deputy headed to trial in connection with an assault involving an inmate last summer.

According to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, Cpl. Christopher Ellul was arraigned on an assault and battery charge and a misconduct in office by a public official charge in May 2021.

Nessel said video showed Ellul grabbing an inmate by the neck twice while helping to remove them from a cell at the Washtenaw County Jail in August 2021.

He was charged after an investigation by Nessel’s Public Integrity Unit. According to the county’s use of force policy, neck holds are considered deadly force.

“Seeing Mr. Ellul bound over for trial reinforces our commitment to ensuring those who are hired to protect and serve do so with utmost integrity,” Nessel said.

The deputy pleaded guilty on April 5, 2022 to disorderly conduct – jostling after authorities say he grabbed an inmate by the neck. Ellul was originally charged with felony assault and battery and misconduct in office. According to Nessel’s office, a plea deal was accepted for multiple reasons including the fact that the involved inmate since left the state.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said Cpl. Christopher Ellul grabbed an inmate by the neck twice while helping to remove them from a cell at the Washtenaw County Jail in August 2020. The incident was captured on video.

“We will continue to pursue instances of police misconduct,” Nessel said. “Those who violate their oath to protect and serve must be held accountable.”

“It is imperative that those willing to protect and serve do so with utmost integrity,” Nessel said. “In instances where officers abuse their power and therefore disrespect the badge, our team stands ready to ensure accountability.”

He will be sentenced on May 17 in 14A District Court by Judge Cedric Simpson.
