LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Fracking in Michigan

All Michiganders should be alarmed about frack waste coming from other states, not just residents who live near the receiving landfill.  Citizens should be alarmed even if the load doesn’t glow, like the one from Washington County, Pennsylvania on its way to Belleville. This is one shipment of many. Another site in Detroit, US Ecology, takes in high level radioactive frack wastes for processing before shipping to Idaho. Michigan has 1,460 injection wells.

The Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan will collect signatures next summer for a 2016 ballot initiative to ban horizontal fracking statewide and disposal and processing of horizontal frack waste from other states.  See the exact language at www.letsbanfracking.org.

It will also repeal the 75-year-old policy requiring judges, juries, and DEQ regulators to “foster” the oil-gas industry “favorably” and “maximize” oil/gas production.

We stand with the people of Washington County, PA who are dealing with the health effects of having over 800 frack wells and four waste impoundments in their communities. We are all connected.
