Buy My Grandkids Ice Cream Cones or Pay My Utility Bill: Lawmakers Have to Limit Utility Rate Increases

I spent many years working in public service, education, and elections, and I know the value of hard work. Today, I supplement my Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits by delivering for Instacart. Living with multiple sclerosis and relying on a fixed SSDI income means every single dollar has a job, whether it’s paying for groceries, gas, medication or keeping the lights on.  

I’ve been a customer for Consumers Energy and DTE for about 32 years, and my utility rates for both have increased in recent months. I’ve received disconnect notices in the past and had to call 211 and the Salvation Army just to keep my lights on. 

If my utility prices keep going up, my family and I will have to watch our budget even more closely and make more sacrifices. As a grandmother, I’m not asking for a lot. I just want to buy my grandkids an ice cream when the ice cream truck comes to our neighborhood without wondering whether that money should go toward my next utility bill.  

Lawmakers in Lansing must take affordability seriously and put limits on excessive utility rate increases. Utility companies like Consumers Energy and DTE have more than enough money. It’s time for our lawmakers to act so all Michiganders can make ends meet and support our families.
