Can’t get enough of skating after the Olympics? Join us for an exclusive screening of the new, award-winning documentary The Fabulous Ice Age, followed by a discussion led by the film’s director, Keri Pickett. The film was recently profiled in the New York Times and has won several awards, including Best Documentary and Best Director at the Women’s Independent Film Festival.
The Fabulous Ice Age chronicles the era of the great American touring ice shows, revealing how, with their dazzling production numbers and variety acts, they dominated family entertainment for decades.
A young German skater in 1915 brings her “ballet on ice” to New York’s Hippodrome Theater, igniting America’s love of theatrical skating. A pair of Minnesotan brothers book their small skating troupe into a hotel tank show, thus laying the groundwork for America’s first touring ice show, the Ice Follies. Olympic skating champion Sonja Henie takes Hollywood by storm, resulting in the creation of The Hollywood Ice Revue and becoming the highest paid star in Hollywood. The Ice Capades, and Holiday On Ice perform to packed houses internationally. Rare archival footage, candid interviews with producers, skating legends and devoted chorus gypsies bring this never-before-told history of a uniquely American art form to life.
Producer, Director & Cinematographer Keri Pickett , who will lead the post-film discussion, is an award-winning photographer and author and the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bush, McKnight, Jerome and Target Foundations and the Minnesota State Arts Board.

Here to tell us more about the making of this important new film – fresh from the Oscar red carpet experience – is the film’s editor Jason Zeldes, with an insider’s look at what it is like to edit a major motion picture – from rough cut to the critically lauded final product.
Jason will show rare raw footage from this acclaimed film and describe how he approached the editing process and its challenges.
20 Feet From Stardom shines the spotlight on the untold stories of such legendary background singers as Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill and more. These are the triumphs and heartbreaks of music’s most unsung talents, featuring rare behind-the-scenes footage, vintage live performances, and interviews with superstars Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Bette Midler, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Chris Botti and Sheryl Crow.

This event is intended for Adults. For the uninitiated, Nerd Nite has been described as “…like the Discovery Channel™…with beer!” and we think that’s pretty apt.
Nerd Nite is a monthly event held in 70+ cities across the globe during which several people give 18-21-minute fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines – while the audience drinks along. Imagine learning about everything from math feuds or the science of the Simpsons, to the genealogy of Godzilla or debunking beer myths. Fun, right?
Just over a year ago, Ann Arbor got its very own Nerd Nite. The AADL caught word of all of the fun, and thought that co-presenting Nerd Nite (thus making it free to attend) would be a great way to spread the love of learning and nerd-ery (non-nerds welcome, too!). Emerging Writers Workshops: Finding Your Literary Tribe

They say that writing is a solitary craft, but it never has to be lonely. Learn how writers can connect to one another and how writing can be inspired as a result. Local authors Lara Zielin and Margaret Yang will lead a workshop that will cover everything from social media to conferences to networking. This is the second Emerging Writers Workshop, a monthly series of writing and publishing events that feature both traditional and indie publishing perspectives.
