Let’s talk about what’s happening to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This isn’t some distant issue; it’s a direct hit to our community, our jobs, and our values.

USAID has been more than an emblem of our nation’s generosity; it’s been a catalyst for economic growth right here in Ann Arbor. By fostering global development, USAID opens new markets for American products, including those from Michigan’s manufacturing sector. Companies like General Motors and Visteon, which employ many Ann Arbor residents, have benefited from these expanded markets, leading to job creation and economic stability in our community.

But it’s not just the big players that feel the impact. Our local tech startups and research institutions, drawn by the University of Michigan’s research prowess, have found opportunities in developing countries, thanks to the groundwork laid by USAID. The agency’s efforts in stabilizing economies and promoting infrastructure development abroad have paved the way for Ann Arbor’s innovators to expand their reach, bringing jobs and investment back to our city.

Now, with USAID’s abrupt dismantling, these opportunities are drying up. The ripple effect threatens to wash over Ann Arbor, leading to job losses and stunted economic growth. It’s a betrayal of the working-class backbone that built this nation—a move that undermines our local industries and the very fabric of our community.

We can’t sit idly by as bureaucrats dismantle agencies that have tangible benefits for our city. It’s time for Ann Arbor to stand up and demand the restoration of USAID. Our jobs, our economy, and our community’s future depend on it.
