In the July 2024 newsletters, readers will find: “Since 2009, Sheriff’s Budget is Up 85 Percent; Number of Deputies is Down 38 Percent” and “Washtenaw County: The Hungry Inch Worm.” In this article, a financial expert analyzes a secret memo from the County Administrator to the County Commissioners leaked to the newspaper. In the secret memo, Administrator Greg Dill recommends a tax increase be put on the ballot, despite the fact that County tax revenue has outpaced inflation by almost 12 percent over the past six years. Will you vote for higher County taxes?
This newsletter also focuses on cutting through the hyperbole and noise from the Sheriff’s candidates and their social media supporters. The newspaper used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain the candidates’ job applications, educational records, policing records, job contracts, evidence of their experience in policing, and verified their qualifications. To put the candidates’ records into perspective, the article also compares the candidates’ qualifications to a recent job posting for the Ann Arbor Chief of Police.
