The city of Ann Arbor is set to host the much-anticipated Ann Arbor Black Film Festival (A2BFF), showcasing an array of powerful narratives, innovative filmmaking, musical expression, and diverse
perspectives. Scheduled to take place in conjunction with the A2 African American Festival on Saturday, June 1, 2024, these events promise to be a celebration of black culture, creativity, and cinematic excellence.
The Ann Arbor Black Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing the creativity and diversity of Black cinema. Founded in 2024, the festival aims to celebrate the rich heritage of Black storytelling and provide a platform for emerging and established filmmakers to share their voices and perspectives. Through screenings, panel discussions, and special events, the festival seeks to inspire dialogue, promote inclusivity, and empower Black creatives in the film industry.

The A2 African American Festival (A2AFF), originally named the African American Downtown Festival, was founded by Lucille H. Porter in 1996, the first Black Ann Arborite to create, develop, and host a downtown festival that continues to occur on an annual basis This big Ann Arbor block party raised money for the local community while honoring the history of Black-owned businesses and homes that previously dominated the area around Fourth Avenue and Ann Street.
The Ann Arbor Black Film Festival has joined the A2AAF to serve as a platform for emerging and established filmmakers to share their stories and amplify underrepresented voices. From thought-provoking documentaries to captivating narratives, the festival lineup features a compelling selection of films that explore a wide range of themes, including social justice, identity, love, and resilience.
“We are thrilled to present our first exciting edition of the Ann Arbor Black Film Festival,” said Chris Anderson, Executive Director. “This year’s submissions are filled with rich diversity of Black storytelling that highlights the talent and creativity of the community. We have already received entries from multiple countries and U.S. residents. We invite audiences to join us in celebrating our final selection of remarkable films and the voices behind them this summer.”
In addition to film screenings, the Ann Arbor Black Film Festival will also feature special events aimed at fostering dialogue, collaboration, and community engagement. The festival aims to support and empower Black creatives in the film industry.
