Ann Arbor YMCA Offers Chronic Disease Prevention & Management

THIS FALL, THE Ann Arbor YMCA will offer an expanded schedule of Chronic Disease Prevention and  Management programs, including: Livestrong® at the YMCA, Enhance®Fitness, Pedaling for Parkinson’s and the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program.  The Livestrong program is free to participants and scholarships are available for the other programs.  Y membership is not required for any of the following programs.

Livestrong at the YMCA is a free, 12 week exercise-based program for cancer survivors who have completed their cancer treatment. Enhance®Fitness is an arthritis exercise class with a variety of aerobic, strength and balance exercises.  One hour classes are scheduled three times a week.  Classes may be performed either seated or standing, and modifications are available to make this the perfect class for participants of all fitness levels and physical abilities.  These classes are proven to help joint mobility, balance and flexibility. Pedaling for Parkinson’s is an exercise-based program for participants diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease.  Evidence exists to suggest that rapid pedaling of bicycle (80-90 revolutions/minute) can reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.  Tandem bike volunteers are available for those individuals unable to maintain the recommended cadence.  One hour classes are held three times/week. YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program is a classroom based program for participants with a BMI of 15 or higher.  The goals of the program are to reduce individual weight by 7% and to build up to 150 minutes of physical activity per week.  These goals are achieved by focusing on behavioral modification around healthy eating and physical activity.  Classes are on-going.
