ACCORDING TO THE FBI Uniform Crime Reports, between 2012 and 2013, crime in several categories rose in Ann Arbor. The number of reported rapes rose from 15 to 23, an increase of 65 percent. The number of violent crimes rose from 112 to 119. Aggravated assaults rose from 64 to 76 and reported larcenies rose from 850 to 866. Over the same period, the number of car thefts reported dropped from 64 to 31. From AAPD reports filed between January 1, 2014 and July 17, 2014, there were 67 reported auto thefts. If this trajectory remains unchanged, there will be well over 100 cars stolen in 2014, triple the number reported in FBI crime stats last year. According to data reported by the AAPD, an auto is most likely to be stolen on Sundays (15 thefts reported) followed by Thursdays and Saturdays (11 auto thefts reported on those days of the week).
Ann Arbor’s sharp rise in auto thefts is inconsistent with a “five-year decline” in auto thefts in Michigan, according to Claims Journal, a publication which serves insurance industry professionals.
Thefts of car parts from autos at park and ride lots is up significantly in 2014, according to a spokesman from the Michigan State Police (MSP).
“They’re after your catalytic converter,” said Lt. McIntyre. McIntyre also says people should call to report stolen auto parts, because then the police are able to obtain a pattern of “where and when the converters are being stolen.”
A 2012 report from CarInsuranceQuotes.com found that Michigan drivers pay a larger percentage of their salaries on car insurance than residents of any other state. Modesto, California tops the list of city’s with the highest rate of auto theft and Virginia Beach, Virginia is the city in the U.S. with the lowest rate of auto thefts.
