26 Home Invasions Reported by AAPD in the Month of May, 90 Thus Far in 2014

ACCORDING TO DATA compiled by the Ann Arbor Police Department, during the month of May there were 338 crimes, total, reported. The homes of 26 residents were invaded by thieves. Of those break-ins, 12 were forced entries, or almost half of the reported incidents. A high number of burglaries and thefts throughout the area occur because the victims have failed to lock the door of their house or car, police officials in Ann Arbor say. A number of area residents said they aren’t surprised to learn that a significant number of crimes took place involving an unlocked door or window. Some suggested that when you’re younger and have children running in and out of a house, the tendency might be to leave the door unlocked.

In the month of May, in Ann Arbor there were 51 assaults, including domestic violence, 19 drug crimes, including possession of heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana, 14 DUIs, eight cars stolen and four sex crimes, including rape. There were no weapons crimes or homicides in the month of May reported by the AAPD, Ypsilanti Police Department or Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department.

@Petsounds, we have a regular public safety feature in each issue of the newspaper. In the June 25th issue, we’ll be looking at assaults.

Thank you for reporting these numbers. If you read AA.com on MLive, you would think that Ann Arbor has one spectacular crime a year, while Ypsilanti is awash in dozens of crimes daily.
